Delhi Air Quality Winter And Bad Air Combine To Worse Health Woes

The level of pollution increases every year in India’s capital Delhi and its surrounding areas. The reason behind increase in pollution level is pollution emanating from vehicles, pollution emanating from factories, burning of crops and weather related problems. People living in North India have been struggling with this problem for many years but the problem remains the same.

air pollution in delhi

Smoke from stubble burning in agricultural areas of the states of Haryana and Punjab, as well as smoke from vehicles and industries, engulfs the city as low temperatures and slow-moving winds trap pollutants in the air. Air pollution in New Delhi was recorded in the severe category for the fifth consecutive day on Monday. The Central Pollution Control Board’s air quality index recorded severe levels of pollution at monitoring stations in the city between 450 and 499, with 500 being the highest level of pollution on the scale.

Pollution is equivalent to 25 cigarettes a day

This score is 20 times higher than the limit considered safe by the World Health Organization (WHO) – this is approximately equivalent to smoking 25 cigarettes a day. Prarthana Bora, Clean Air Asia’s India director, told DW that unfavorable topography and regional meteorology, along with windy and dusty conditions during summer, contribute greatly to Delhi’s air pollution. This is particularly worsened by low relative humidity which increases resuspension of particles. Apart from this, there are occasional incidents of dust transportation from surrounding areas. As a landlocked megacity, there are limited ways for polluted air to escape from Delhi. Nor is Delhi in a relatively advantageous position to enjoy wind substitution.

Effect of bad air on diabetes patients
According to health experts, not only is there a risk of type-2 diabetes due to air pollution, it can also be dangerous for patients already suffering from diabetes. Due to air pollution, there is also a risk of increased inflammation in the body and damage to blood vessels. Its negative effect can weaken the power of insulin to control blood sugar. In many studies, air pollution has also been considered dangerous for the intestines. It can also increase diabetes.

Effect of pollution on heart health
Air pollution also has a negative impact on heart health. Research has shown that bad air can increase the risk of heart disease in the long run. According to health experts, PM 2.5 in the air can increase the heartbeat and increase problems like cardiac ischemia. Therefore, heart patients should protect themselves from bad air.

Bad air can increase respiratory diseases
The tiny particles (PM 2.5) present in the air are so small that they can enter deep into the respiratory tract. Due to which the lungs can be damaged. In such a situation, there may be irritation in the eyes, nose, throat and lungs. Apart from this, problems like cough and sneezing may also increase. Prolonged exposure to air pollution can cause serious damage to the respiratory system. Therefore, efforts should be made to prevent this.

chronic bronchitis problem
Bronchitis is a special type of inflammation that blocks the airways leading to your lungs. When your airways (trachea and bronchi) feel irritated, they have become inflamed and filled with mucus. Due to this the victim gets cough. Air pollution can also cause inflammation in our airways, which can lead to bronchitis.

asthma attack
For people who are already suffering from asthma, pollution can make their condition worse than before. Also, healthy people can also become victims of asthma. The American Lung Association has warned that asthma problems may increase in people who are breathing ozone and particle pollution. According to a report of 2018, 60 lakh children in America became victims of asthma in just one year due to air pollution.

lung cancer
A study published in Lancet in September reported how increasing air pollution can cause lung cancer, mesothelioma, mouth and throat cancer. That is, as the risk of air pollution increases, the problems of lung patients or lung diseases automatically start increasing.

other dangerous diseases
People exposed to air pollution for a long time are also at risk of COPD, pneumonia and heart diseases. Due to this, dysfunction occurs in the central nervous system. The severity of these diseases can be different in almost every person. These have a direct impact on a person’s current lifestyle, health condition, age, and gender.
