Delhi Transport Minister Pankaj Singh said on Tuesday that the government has extended the current electric vehicle (EV) policy to 31 March 2026. Actually, suggestions will be taken from people on the draft of the new policy, which is likely to take time. Pankaj Singh said that the expansion of the policy was one of the listed matters for the cabinet meeting held on Tuesday and it has been decided to increase it. He told PTI, “The existing electric vehicle policy has been extended by 31 March, 2026 or till the new policy is approved, whatever it is earlier.”

Major provisions of policy will be discussed

The Transport Minister said that the move aims to facilitate comprehensive counseling with all concerned parties including citizens, industry experts, private organizations and environmental groups. Pankaj Singh said that during this extended period, the major provisions of the policy will be discussed. This includes strengthening EV charging infra, reviewing subsidies and discounts to promote EV’s acceptance, developing a strong system for safe e-waste and battery disposal and clearly define the role of public and private sectors in furthering the electric vehicle environment.

Arvind Kejriwal’s government introduced EV policy in the year 2020

Let us tell you that the current EV policy of Delhi was first introduced in 2020, at that time the Aam Aadmi Party government was in Delhi and Arvind Kejriwal was the Chief Minister of Delhi. Its duration ended in August 2023, after which the duration of this policy has been extended several times.

Deadline was increased on July 15 itself

According to a report by HT, the current Rekha Gupta government of Delhi extended the EV policy for four months on July 15 last week, after which the new deadline was November 15. The officials associated with the case stated last week that the draft of the new policy is still under review and approval is awaited. After which the Delhi government has once again increased the deadline of Delhi’s EV policy to 31 March 2026.
