Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi on Tuesday expressed serious concern over demographic changes in some parts of the country including Assam and West Bengal. He described it as a ‘time bomb’ and appealed to the concerned parties to find solutions. In some states including Maharashtra, amidst the ongoing disputes about language and claims of imposing Hindi, he said that it is not in the character or culture of India to have bitterness in the name of language.

Ravi said, “This country has always managed to fight external invasions, but when it comes to internal affairs, what happened in the past? In the past, India was partitioned due to internal upheaval in 1947. People who follow an ideology announced that they do not want to live with all of us. This ideology broke our country.”

Concern over demographic changes

The Governor of Tamil Nadu was addressing students and teachers at the National Defense University (RRU) on the occasion of the commencement of educational year 2025-2026. He asked, “Is anyone worrying about demographic changes in Assam, West Bengal and Purvanchal (Uttar Pradesh and Bihar) in the last 30-40 years? Can anyone guess today that in the coming 50 years, there will be no work of the country’s partition in these areas in the coming 50 years?”

“How to deal with this problem, you have to think”

The former IPS officer said, “We should do a study on the growing sensitive demographics and its future in some areas. This problem is like a time bomb. We have to think that in future we will deal with this problem. Must start looking for a solution from today itself.” According to him, the military power of a country is not enough to deal with internal disturbance. Ravi argued that if the military power of the Soviet Union was enough to deal with internal problems, it would not have been disintegrated in 1991.

“Doing bitterness in the name of language is not the character of India”

Amidst the ongoing controversy over language in Maharashtra and Karnataka, Ravi said that it is not the character of India to have bitterness in the name of language. The Governor said, “After independence, we started fighting among ourselves. One of the reasons for this was language. He (those who advocated the states on the basis of linguistic identity) called it linguistic nationalism.” He said that the central leadership has repeatedly clarified that all Indian languages are of the same level and are eligible for equal respect. He said, “Union Home Minister Amit Shah has said on several occasions that all Indian languages are our national languages and we respect each of them. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also said that at least primary education in each state should be given in local languages.” The Governor said that bitterness among people in the name of language is not part of India’s ethos.
