Belpatra is considered very dear to Lord Shiva, and it is believed that Mahadev is pleased soon by placing it on Shivling and fulfills all the wishes of the devotees. Offering fragmented or broken leaves does not give the fruits of worship. The three leaves are considered to be a symbol of Tridev Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesh, and it also represents the trident of Lord Shiva.

7. Keep the smooth and Shivling While offering Belpatra, place its smooth side (upper part) towards the Shivling. The stalk of Belpatra should be towards you. This is the right way to offer bell -leaf, which gives full benefit of worship.
8. Apply sandalwood on three leaves While offering Belpatra, apply sandalwood on all three leaves. Sandalwood is very dear to Lord Shiva and is a symbol of coolness. Applying sandalwood further increases the purity and effect of the vine.
9. The right time to break While offering Belpatra on the Shivling, take special care that it is considered good to break the bell leaf after sunrise and before noon. Belpatra should not be broken after sunset.
