Born on June 1, 1929 in the city of Calcutta, Kaneez Fatima Rashid alias Nargis had a film atmosphere due to Maa Jaddan Bai’s actress and filmmaker. Despite this, Nargis was not interested in her childhood. Her desire was to become a doctor while her mother wanted her to become an actress.
One day Nargis’s mother asked her to go to filmmaker and director Mehboob Khan for the screen test. Since Nargis was not willing to enter the acting field, she thought that if she fails in the screen test, she would not have to become an actress.
During the screen test, Nargis spoke in a unique way and thought that Mehboob Khan would fail him in the screen test but his idea turned out to be wrong. Mehboob Khan chose her as a heroine for his film ‘Takdir’. However, Nargis was not interested in being a part of cinema. Nargis told during a radio interview in the early 1960s, I wanted to become a doctor, because those days people did not think too much about films. It was thought that girls from good families should not join films. Women working in films had no place in society.
He had said, I cried about this till I could not cry any more, but when the tears spilled, I started thinking more. I thought, my mother works in films, but she is not bad. She is the most magnificent woman in the world.
In the year 1945, Nargis got a chance to work in the film ‘Humaonu’ produced by Mehboob Khan. The year 1949 proved to be an important stage in Nargis’ cine career. This year, successful films like his rain and style were released. Despite this, Nargis was successful in attracting the attention of the audience in the film style on the Prem Triangle.
The time from 1950 to 1954 proved to be bad for Nargis’ cine career. During this time, many films like his glass, bewafa, Ashiana, Ambar, Anthhoni, Shikstar, Papi, Dhun, Angare failed at the box office. But in the year 1955, her 420 film with Raj Kapoor was released, after which she once again reached the fame of fame.
His pairing in Nargis’s cine career was well liked with Raj Kapoor. Raj Kapoor and Nargis first acted together in the film Aag in 1948. After marriage, Nargis reduced working in films. After about 10 years, Nargis acted in the film ‘Raat Aur Din’ in 1967 at the behest of his brothers Anwar Hussain and Akhtar Hussain. He was awarded the National Award for this film. This was the first time an actress was given the National Award. Nargis did about 55 films in her cine career.
