The Department of Telecommunications has proposed a change in cyber safety rules to prevent fraud through mobile phone numbers. In the draft cyber security rules published by the department on June 24, it has been said to create a new platform for phone number verification. It will also include institutions that use phone numbers to identify customers. These include banks that use phone numbers for UPI transactions.

‘MNV Manch’ will be included in the new system, through which authorized institutions and licensed will be able to verify the phone number. This will enable to check whether the mobile number of an enterprise or users is present in the database of an authorized institution or licensee.

The new cyber security rules also make provisions for units that use phone numbers to identify customers or their transactions. The new rule suggested a fee of Rs 1.5 per request for verification of the status of the mobile number in the telecom database run by the authorized unit on behalf of the Central or State Governments.

After the implementation of new amendments, another unit will have to pay three rupees per request for mobile number verification.
