The decision of the Supreme Court has brought great relief for the owners of the old trains.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday gave great relief to the owners of 10 -year -old diesel and 15 -year -old petrol vehicles in Delhi. The court clearly stated that no forced or punitive action will be taken against the owners of these vehicles. The decision came during the hearing on the petition of the Delhi government, in which the ban on old trains was challenged. The court will now hear the matter after 4 weeks.

Notice issued to Delhi and Central Government

The case was heard by the bench led by Chief CJI BR Gawai, including Justice Vinod K Chandran and Justice NV Anjaria. The court issued a notice to the Delhi government and the central government on the petition of the Delhi government and sought answers in 4 weeks. CJI Gawai said, ‘Till then there will be no forced action against the 10 -year -old diesel vehicles and owners of 15 -year -old petrol vehicles based on the age of their vehicles. Along with this, no punitive action will be taken. CJI also commented, ‘Earlier cars used to run for 40–50 years. There are still vintage cars.

Delhi government filed a petition in court

Explain that the Delhi government filed a petition in the Supreme Court, challenging the 10 -year -old diesel and 15 -year -old petrol vehicles, which are called ‘end of life vehicles’. The government says that this ban is not on scientific basis. The Delhi government argued that their pollution level should be investigated instead of the age of the vehicles. At the same time, the government demanded that the Air Quality Management Commission (CAQM) and the Central Government should intensively investigate the impact on the environment of this ban.

There was a dispute over ‘No Fuel for Old Vehicles’

In July 2025, the Delhi government implemented the ‘No Fuel for Old Vehicle’ policy. Under this policy, it was decided to stop the old trains from fueling at petrol pumps. But after the sharp protest of the public, this policy was stopped in just 2 days. The Delhi government admitted that there were many problems like logistics and lack of infrastructure in implementing this ban. Subsequently, CAQM issued instructions to ban fuel of old trains in Delhi-NCR from 1 November 2025. The Delhi government challenged this directive in the Supreme Court and said that this ban has been implemented without scientific basis.

The story started after NGT’s decision

In 2015, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) banned diesel and 15 -year -old petrol vehicles, which was corrected in 2018, to improve air quality in Delhi, which was corrected by the Supreme Court in 2018. But the Delhi government says that after the implementation of the new emission standard, it is not necessary to ban the old trains completely. The government argues that this ban will affect the middle and lower income people who depend on old trains.
