ED issued the first purple notice through Interpol, exposes new moves of money laundering
The ED has issued its first purple notice.
New Delhi: The Enforcement Directorate i.e. ED has taken a major step in the war against money laundering. On 21 August 2025, the ED issued a purple notice through Interpol for the first time. This notice has been issued to highlight the new and vicious methods of money laundering at the international level, which is considered an important initiative towards fighting crime globally. The ED investigation has revealed a modus operandi in which money laundering was being done on a large scale in the name of international trade using domestic and foreign rock companies.
‘This was a game of white money white’
Many tricks were adopted in this fake business, such as showing low price (under-invoicing) in imports, fake duty-free imports for goods such as semiconductors, preparing fake documents and re-exporting circular through third countries. With all these tricks, such an atmosphere was created that everything looked like a legitimate international trade, while in reality it was a game of illegal money to white.
According to the ED, this system looked like a valid trade from outside, but actually it acts like a hawala system. The only difference was that formal banking channels and fake documents were used in it to avoid the eyes of regulatory agencies. Due to this manner, criminals were managed to make black money valid on a large scale.
The purpose and importance of purple notice
One of the 8 special notices of the Interpol, the purple notice aims to warn the investigating agencies of 196 countries about the new methods of criminals, their tricks and the methods of hiding. The ED said that such notices are very important to make global agencies aware and to caution them with new trends of money laundering. The ED has been trying to increase informal cooperation with different countries and international groups for a long time to get the correct information on time and intensify the investigation.
Why is this step of ED so important?
Through the purple notice, the ED has not only exposed this new method of money laundering, but has also taken steps towards uniting the investigative agencies globally. This notice will alert agencies around the world about this vicious method and help in tightening such activities in the future. This move of ED can prove to be a milestone towards further strengthening the fight against money laundering not only in India but all over the world.
