Life cut in poverty
Mahmud was from a film family. His father Mumtaz Ali was a dancer and actor in Bombay Talkies. Ali’s family faced serious economic troubles, when his father was addicted to alcohol, which ruined his career. Mahmud became the only earner of the family due to the circumstances. Mahmood did many strange things before achieving stardom. In order to meet his needs, Mahmud raised his family’s stomach without any hesitation. According to reports, Mahmood used to sell eggs on the streets of Mumbai. Mahmood also worked as a driver and also became the driver of PL Santoshi (Rajkumar Santoshi’s father). The skilled actor-filmmaker also worked as horse riding instructor and table tennis coach. Then, to enter the film industry, Ali began working as a junior artist and even played a character without credit.
Mahmood was also ready for cleaner’s job
In an interview, Mahmud once jokingly said that he was so desperate for the work that he could do any job in the studio to stay close to the camera, even Spot Boy or Cleaner. When Mahmood gave Amitabh Bachchan a big break when Amitabh Bachchan was struggling after the failure of seven Hindustani, Mahmood gave him a chance to lead Bombay to Goa. He supported Bachchan mentally and emotionally. When Bachchan was lacking in confidence, Mahmood boosted his morale and even asked his crew member to encourage him and praise him. Mahmood Ali used to scare the heroes of films. The presence of this legendary comedian was such that Hero often rejected the film. Dharmendra once praised Mahmud and said, “This is the comedian whose hero was afraid.” The veteran comedian filmmaker died on 23 July 2004. But even today people remember him for his characters.
