E-sim fraud
ESIM Fraud: The government has issued a new type of fraud warning. The Indian Cybercrime Coordination Center (i4C) has issued a warning to users for scams in the name of fake e-sim card. The government has advised all the agencies and stakeholders of the country about this so that users can be aware of this new fraud.
Government’s Warning
The i4C said in its warning that recently there have been cases of several scams related to ESIM, in which the scammers cheated Rs 4 lakh from the account despite a user’s ATM card to disable UPI account. To scam such scams, cyber criminals target users’ phone numbers so that OTP can get access. As soon as the bank gets access to the customers, scammers dent their account.
How do you do fraud?
The i4C said that scammers first call users and send ESIM activation links to them. On clicking on the link by users, the scammers get access to their mobile number. The ingredients with physical sim of users end the signals and the SIM is activated in the device with ESIM of the scammer. As soon as the access of mobile number is received, scammers do transactions from users’ accounts. This requires OTP, which is found on the ESIM activated by the scammer.
Keep these things in mind
The i4C has asked users to take care of some things to avoid such fraud. The government agency warned the people to ignore the calls coming from the unknown number. Also, do not open the link to be sent from these numbers. By doing this, hackers will deactivate your physical sim and activate ESIM in your phone and get access to bank account, UPI etc.
Apart from this, if the signal suddenly disappears in the phone of a mobile users, then they should immediately contact the bank and the telecom operator. The Department of Telecommunications has blocked 3 lakh to 4 lakh SIM cards in view of the recently growing financial fraud. These SIM cards were being used for fraud.
