New Delhi: It is a known fact that menopause typically occurs in women around the age of 45 to 55, signaling the end of their reproductive years. However, what many may not realise is that Premature Ovarian Insufficiency (POI) can occur much earlier and also lead to an early onset of menopause.
Dr Rupali Tambe, Fertility consultant Nova IVF Pune explained that POI, often referred to as premature menopause, happens when a woman’s ovaries stop functioning properly before the age of 40. “There are several factors that can contribute to POI, including genetic predisposition, autoimmune disorders, and certain medical treatments such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy,” she said.
Can POI impact fertility?
When the ovaries are unable to produce sufficient levels of hormones like estrogen and progesterone, women experience symptoms similar to those associated with natural menopause like hot flashes, irregular periods, mood swings, and decreased libido.

Dr Tambe said, “The impact of POI extends beyond fertility issues. It can also have significant implications for a woman’s overall health.”
Studies have shown that women with early-onset menopause face higher risks for conditions such as heart disease and osteoporosis later in life. This underscores the importance of early detection and management strategies for women experiencing symptoms related to premature ovarian insufficiency.
Symptoms of early menopause
One common symptom of early menopause is irregular periods that can be lighter or heavier and occur more frequently or less often than before. In addition to irregular menstruation, women going through early menopause may experience hot flashes and night sweats. These sudden waves of heat can be intense and uncomfortable, causing excessive sweating and making it difficult for women to get a good night’s sleep.
“Alongside these physical symptoms, emotional changes are also common with premature ovarian failure. Mood swings, anxiety, and depression can all present themselves during this time. Moreover, an unexpected symptom that many women may not anticipate with early menopause is bone loss,” the expert added.
Estrogen plays a pivotal role in maintaining bone strength; however, low estrogen levels due to premature ovarian failure increase the risk of osteoporosis at a younger age.
A word of caution
Women who experience early onset menopause should pay close attention to their bone health by seeking regular check-ups and considering lifestyle adjustments such as weight-bearing exercise and calcium-rich diets. One will have to follow the instructions given by the expert only.

During early menopause, women may experience a range of physical and emotional changes. It is important for women going through this phase to keep in mind that they are not alone in their journey. Joining support groups or seeking professional help can be beneficial in navigating through the challenges that come with early menopause.
Another aspect to keep in mind for women experiencing early menopause is the potential impact on fertility and family planning. Consulting with a fertility expert about alternative options, like freezing eggs or other assisted reproductive techniques, can provide peace of mind for those who still wish to have children.
