At least 49 people have died due to heavy rains and snowfall in the eastern Cape province of South Africa. Officials said on Wednesday that due to extreme cold, heavy rains and snowfall occurred in some parts of the country, after which it was flooded.

6 students swept away in flood waters

Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane said that the police have stated the number of dead. Mabuyane told reporters that six students were also included in the dead, who were swept away after their school bus got stuck in flood waters near a river on Tuesday. He said that four other students are still missing. Mabuyane’s office reported 7 deaths in the flood on Tuesday, but now the figure has increased to 49.
