Film made by selling wife’s jewelry, flops only 15 minutes after release
Zeenat Aman and Deva Anand.
In the golden era of Hindi cinema, if an actor could be called a symbol of charisma, passion and adamant confidence, then he was Dev Anand. His style, his smile and his style ruled millions of hearts. The girls used to be in line for a glimpse of them. Zeenat Aman, Waheeda Rehman and many famous actresses are still remembered, but even on this height of fame and success, there was a moment that shook them inside. A film, a mistake and scattered in just 15 minutes, everything that he cherished over the years.
Dev Anand’s biggest defeat
Recently, Dev Anand’s nephew and famous film director Shekhar Kapoor shared a story in a conversation with Filmfare’s YouTube channel, which was the biggest emotional setback for Dev Anand. It was the year 1974. Dev Anand was working on a new project, the name of the film was ‘Ishq Ishq Ishq’. In this film, he was not only an actor but also a director. Together there were big stars like Zeenat Aman, Shabana Azmi, Zarina Wahab, Kabir Bedi and Jeevan. The film looked a blockbuster on paper, including Star Power, Romance, Music and Dev Anand’s name. Everyone believed that this film would create panic at the box office.

A phone call changed life
Kismet probably had something else. On the premiere of the film, Dev Anand was sitting near the phone in his house, waiting for congratulations, but as soon as the phone rang, a news shook him. Somebody said that the audience is leaving the cinema within 15 minutes of the film starting. Dev Anand’s heart broke on this matter. The film flopped so soon that the audience did not even get a chance to change the mood or pack the film again. The film’s performance was so disappointing that it also affected Dev Anand’s economic status.
Dev Anand’s Strong Mentality
Shekhar Kapoor further explained that a producer told him that Dev Anand had put his personal properties at stake to make the film. He said, “He had sold his wife’s jewelry and his house to complete this film.” When Shekhar Kapoor said this to Dev Anand, he just smiled and replied, ‘Movies are made like this.’ Need courage to say this. This was the answer of a person who was ready to sacrifice everything for art. His response reflects his passion and respect for profession.
Even after this, the process of stardom of Dev Anand continued
Although the failure of ‘Ishq Ishq Ishq’ did not harm Dev Anand’s reputation, it became the most painful chapter of his career. He had placed everything not only financially but also emotionally at stake. Most people broke with such failure, but Dev Anand did not give up. He moved forward and kept making films. His passion never diminished. This was his insistence that made him an era of Hindi cinema, not just a superstar.
