Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav has given a good news on Friday. The first hydrogen -powered coach (driving power car) has been successfully tested at Chennai -based ICF. The Railway Minister informed that India is developing 1200 HP hydrogen train. This will include India in the leading countries in hydrogen -powered train technology. This initiative is considered a major step to take the railway sector of India towards green energy.

Five months ago, the Railway Minister said in the House that Indian Railways started work on a state -of -the -art project to develop the country’s first hydrogen train, which will be one of the world’s longest and maximum power hydrogen trains. Along with the train, integrated hydrogen production-distribution facility has been conceived to recreate hydrogen. Indian Railways has launched a state -of -the -art project by retrofitment (re -conversion) of Hydrogen Fuel Cell on Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (Demu) Rek for the development of the first hydrogen train on practical basis.
Use of hydrogen fuel cell
Let me tell you, power is generated using hydrogen fuel cell in hydrogen driven trains. This power is used to run the motors of the train, causing it to spread much less pollution than diesel or coal. The only emission from hydrogen fuel cell trains is of water vapor, which makes them carbon-free transport options.
Benefits of hydrogen train
Hydrogen -powered trains will prove to be extremely beneficial for the environment. This train only emit water vapor. Hydrogen trains do not remove any pollutants, only release water vapor, which protects the environment. In addition, hydrogen is naturally available and can also be made from renewable energy sources such as solar and wind energy, making it a permanent fuel.
These trains take very little time for fuel, which makes it easier to operate. Their engine technology is more efficient, which reduces fuel consumption and improves performance. These trains run almost calm and do not cause any sound or visible pollution.
