Independence Day 2025: The date of 15 August 1947, which became a new identity of India. On this day, independence was celebrated throughout the country and for the first time the national flag of India was waved. But do you know that on the day of independence, India’s first national flag was stretched elsewhere, not in Delhi. On the day of independence, the first story of hoisting the tricolor is a different story of the document.
First government flag hoisting of independence
In fact, at around 5:30 am on August 15, 1947, when the first rays of the sun were blooming in the sky, India’s first official flag hoisting took place at St. George, Fort St. George, Chennai (then Madras). This was the same place where the British government set up its largest headquarters in South India.
A special tricolor was prepared for this date, which was 12 feet in length and 8 feet in width. This silk flag was hoisted with great precaution, which was the victory of Hindustani sovereignty over the British Raj.
The change of independence and power was not only Mahdud till Delhi, but was happening together in the entire country. The hoisting of the tricolor in the largest Markaj, the British rule, became an important mark of independence of India.
This historical tricolor is still safe in the Fort Museum in Chennai. It is kept in airtight in a special glass box, so that it does not deteriorate over time. Silica gel nearby has also been used to protect the flag.

When was the tricolor hoisted for the first time on the Red Fort?
Even though every year on Independence Day, the Prime Minister hoists the tricolor at the Red Fort, but it did not happen on August 15 in 1947. On August 15, 1947, the first Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru hoisted the tricolor in Delhi’s Princess Park (near India Gate) on August 15, 1947. The same night, he gave a historic speech of “Trist with Destiny” in Parliament House.
The tricolor was first hoisted on the Red Fort on the next day i.e. August 16, 1947. Since then it has become a tradition that every year on August 15, the Prime Minister hoists the flag at the Red Fort and addresses the country.
