Patna. Bihar has made a big jump in fisheries. Prior to 2005, fish production used to be 2.68 lakh metric tonnes, which has increased to 8.73 lakh metric tonnes in 2023-24. According to government data, fish production in the state has increased by more than 3 times in the last 20 years.

Along with fish production, the state government is now giving priority to fish marketing. Production is beneficial only when the proper market is available for it. For this purpose, the state government has planned to construct 30-30 fish markets in every identified block under the Chief Minister Fisheries Marketing Scheme. New technology like Bioflock and RAS is being used to increase fish production. Bihar has 439 bioflock and 15 RAS units. You will be surprised to know that this year 61.81 lakh cumin of fish has also been added to other rivers including Ganga, Gandak, Budhi Gandak, so that fish production can increase.
Case 1: Jyotsna Singh’s inspiring story
Location: Pura Village, Shivajinagar Block, Samastipur
Jyotsna Singh started the business of fish seed production. In the year 2023, with the help of the Department of Fisheries, he established lotus fisheries seed hatchery by taking a grant of Rs 15 lakh. Today she is employing more than 20 people. Impressed by their success, many other rural women are also stepping into fisheries.
Case 2: Sanjay Sahni’s hard work paid off
Location: Kochi Village, Shivajinagar Block, Samastipur
Sanjay Sahni started producing 15 tonnes of fish every year by taking advantage of the Chief Minister’s Integrated Chaur Development Scheme. Due to this, he is earning an annual income of 12 to 15 lakh rupees. Impressed by his work, other farmers like Shyam Babu Yadav and Ashrafi Sahni have also joined this work and are earning up to Rs 15-20 lakh.
Case 3: Mass initiative of Raipur village
Location: Dubella Chaur, Saraiganj Block, Village Raipur
Here Lakshmi Sahni, Sheela Devi, Pramod Kumar Sahni, Rani Kumari and Siti Devi have started fisheries on 8 hectares of land. They are producing 10-15 tonnes of fish per year and earning from Rs 13 to 18 lakhs from it.
