Former Kerala Chief Minister and senior Marxist leader VS Achuthanandan died at the age of 101. CPI (M) has given this information. Senior CPI (M) leader and former Kerala Chief Minister VS Achuthanandan was ill for a long time and was hospitalized. 101 -year -old Achuthanandan was admitted to the hospital on 23 June after a suspected heart attack. He was staying at his son or daughter’s house in Thiruvananthapuram after resigning as the chairman of the Administrative Reform Committee in January 2021.
On Monday, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and CPI (M) leader went to the hospital to meet him. Apart from the Chief Minister, several party leaders, including Finance Minister KN Balagopal and State Secretary, went to the hospital to meet Achuthanandan on Monday afternoon. The news agency PTI has quoted sources as saying.
Who was VS Achuthanandan?
Achuthanandan was a strong person in Kerala politics. At the age of 16, he started his political journey by joining the popular opposition against feudal zamindars and colonial rule in Alappuzha. He made his mark as a worker and agitator by organizing Girmitia agricultural laborers and aspinwall factory workers in Kuttnad.
Achuthanandan was actively involved in the fiery leftist movement against the colonial government in 1946, which results in the famous and tragic Punnpara-Vayalar rebellion. They went underground, but were arrested and tortured in police custody.
In 1964, Achuthanandan left the National Council of undivided Indian Communist Party and became one of the founding members of the Communist Party of India (Marxist). Later, during the Emergency, the government put them in jail. He was the Chief Minister from 2006 to 2011 and the longest leader of the opposition.
