Former Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satyapal Malik dies
Former Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satyapal Malik died on Tuesday at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in Delhi after prolonged illness. He breathed his last at 1:12 pm.
Satyapal Malik was battling kidney disease for a long time. On May 11, he was admitted to the hospital when the condition worsened. He was the Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, Bihar, Goa and Meghalaya. In 2018, he also took over the additional charge of the Governor of Odisha.
Satyapal was the Governor of Jammu and Kashmir from 23 August 2018 to 30 October 2019. During his tenure, Article 370 was removed from Jammu and Kashmir on 5 August 2019 on this day.
Satyapal Malik was accused of corruption
On May 22, the CBI filed a charge sheet against 5 people including Satyapal Malik in the corruption case related to the Kiru Hydropower Project in Jammu and Kashmir. It is accused of disturbing the civil works contract worth about Rs 2,200 crore.
The CBI raided Satyapal Malik’s hideout on 22 February 2024 on the same matter. Also raided 29 other locations in Delhi.
Malik accused of corruption in 2021
Satyapal Malik had said at an event in Jhunjhunu, Rajasthan on 17 October 2021 that he was offered crores of bribes as the Governor of Jammu and Kashmir. During that time he had two files. Among them, one of the big industrialists and the other was Mehbooba Mufti and a person in the BJP’s coalition government.
Malik had said that his secretaries said that there was a scam in it, after which he had canceled both the deals. He was offered to pay Rs 150-150 crore for both files. Malik said, ‘I said that I have come with five kurta-pajamas and will only leave here with him. When CBI asks, I will also tell the names of those who offer.
CBI recorded FIR in two separate cases
The CBI had registered 2 FIRs in the case. The first FIR is related to alleged corruption in issuing contracts of about Rs 60 crore. The amount was taken from an insurance company as a bribe to give the contract of Jammu and Kashmir Employees Health Care Insurance Scheme in 2017-18.
In the second FIR 2019, a private firm is associated with corruption in giving a contract of Rs 2,200 crore to the Keru Hydro Power Project (HEP) civil work. CBI is investigating both these cases.
