Payne’s ex-fiancée issued a cease-and-desist order in the week leading up to his death, accusing him of repeatedly contacting her and her family. In her account, she also revealed how the boy band star was “always messaging” her despite their breakup. “Oh, I’m not okay,” she quoted the British singer-songwriter, as he often brought up his chaotic mental health in their conversations. “He was always playing with death and saying, ‘Okay, I’m going to die. I’m not doing well.'”
