Islamabad: Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has been given a big relief by the Supreme Court on Thursday. The court has granted Imran Khan bail in eight cases related to the violence of May 9, 2023. This has caused a wave of happiness among his supporters.
Let me tell you that after Imran Khan’s arrest in Islamabad on 9 May 2023, his supporters committed violence and vandalism in many cities. After this, Khan and his party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) were booked for inciting riots.
Three -member bench was hearing
A three -member bench of the Supreme Court was hearing the case, which was chaired by Chief Justice Afridi and included Justice Shafi Siddiqui and Justice Miangul Aurangzeb. Imran Khan was granted bail by the court after hearing the arguments of both sides. Advocate Salman Safdar on behalf of Khan and Punjab Special Prosecutor Zulfikar Naqvi on behalf of the government. Imran Khan’s party PTI expressed happiness with the #Victoryforimrankhan hashtag on the social media forum X, welcoming the decision.
Will Imran come out of jail now
PTI international spokesman Zulfikar Bukhari said, “The Supreme Court has granted bail to Imran Khan in the May 9 cases. Now only one case needs bail in the Al-Kadir Trust case, after which he can be released from jail.” However, Bukhari clarified that despite this bail, Khan will not be released yet, as he is serving a sentence in the 190 million-pound corruption al-Kadir Trust case.
Bail in May 9 riots
72-year-old Imran Khan filed a petition for bail in cases related to the 9 May riots in Lahore’s Anti-Terrorism Court (including an attack on the Lahore Corps Commander’s house), which was rejected in November 2024. Later, the Lahore High Court also rejected his appeal on 24 June 2025. He then appealed to the Supreme Court. Imran Khan has been facing several cases since being removed from the post in April 2022. He has been lodged in Rawalpindi’s High-Security Adiala Jail since August 2023. (PTI)
