Baghdad, October 20 (IANS). Four militants, including a senior Islamic State (IS) member, were killed in an airstrike in Salahuddin province, north of the Iraqi capital Baghdad, on Sunday, the Iraqi military said.

The airstrike followed several days of surveillance by Iraqi military intelligence, according to a statement from Security Media Cell, a media outlet affiliated with the Iraqi Joint Operations Command.

As a result of the airstrike, four IS militants, including the leader of the IS group, were killed in the province, while weapons, ammunition, explosive belts, communications equipment and various logistics supplies were destroyed, Xinhua news agency reported.

The security situation in Iraq has improved since the defeat of IS in 2017. However, some IS members are based in urban centres, deserts and rugged areas, and continue to carry out guerrilla attacks against security forces and civilians.
