Gary Kirsten opened PCB’s pole! Pakistan has excesses with the coach who won the World Cup to Team India?
Former South African cricketer and coach who won the 2011 World Cup to India has made serious allegations against the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). In a podcast interview, Kirsten revealed why he resigned from Pakistan’s white ball (ODI and T20) team head coach within just six months.
He says that he was unable to play an effective role due to the selection of the team and intervention in the strategy. However, he also indicated that if “the right circumstances”, he is ready to join the Pakistan team again in the future.
Resentment expressed on being removed from selection process
Gary Kirsten was appointed as coach of Pakistan’s limited overs format in early 2024, but in June 2024 he left the post. Talking on the podcast, he said that he was excluded from the selection process and he was asked to work with the prepared team only.
What did Gary Kirsten say?
Talking about the matter, he said, “These were some very turbulent months. I soon understood that I would not have any significant impact on the team. When I was removed from the selection process and only one team was handed over, it became extremely difficult to expect a positive change as a coach.”
Questions raised on PCB structure
Gary Kirsten, without naming anyone, questioned the operation of PCB, saying that external pressure and the intervention of the authorities hinders the development of the team. He said, “If I get a call from Pakistan again tomorrow, I would definitely like to go but for the players and only when the conditions are right. The cricket teams should be governed by the cricket teams. When this does not happen and the external noise dominates, it becomes difficult to take the team in the direction that they need.”
