During his recent visit to Australia from November 3-7, Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar engaged in extensive discussions with his Australian counterpart, Penny Wong. Their meetings, particularly the 15th India-Australia Foreign Ministers’ Framework Dialogue held in Canberra, covered a broad range of topics, including India-Australia strategic ties, regional security, and the situation in Canada. This visit marked a significant step toward enhancing the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two nations, initially formalized in 2020 and set to reach its five-year milestone soon.

Jaishankar addressed India’s concerns about Canada, following Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s recent claims linking India to the killing of a Khalistani separatist. India has strongly denied these allegations. Jaishankar emphasized to Wong the dangers posed by extremism in Canada, where he argued that “political space” is being given to radical groups, creating a security threat that affects both countries. This ongoing diplomatic strain has seen responses from other nations, especially those within the “Five Eyes” intelligence alliance, to which both Canada and Australia belong.

Besides bilateral issues, Jaishankar and Wong discussed shared regional concerns, including stability in the Indo-Pacific, security cooperation, and the importance of a rules-based international order. Wong highlighted Australia’s vision of “free, open, inclusive, and rules-based” Indo-Pacific relations, affirming Australia’s commitment to cooperation with India, particularly through the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad), which also includes Japan and the United States. The two leaders reviewed potential avenues for deepening ties in areas such as defense, trade, clean energy, and technology.

Jaishankar’s visit also involved dialogue on global conflicts, such as the Israel-Hamas conflict, where he underlined India’s commitment to counter-terrorism and humanitarian law, emphasizing the need for urgent aid to Gaza. In a broader discussion, both ministers aligned on advocating for peaceful resolutions and addressing the humanitarian aspects in ongoing global issues, including the Russia–Ukraine conflict.

In a reflection of their deepening ties, Jaishankar and Wong participated in “Raisina Down Under,” an Australian edition of India’s well-known Raisina Dialogue, which focuses on pressing geopolitical and geo-economic issues. This collaborative platform symbolizes the growing diplomatic, economic, and cultural ties between India and Australia, a relationship supported by a sizeable Indian diaspora in Australia, which has become an influential bridge for bilateral relations.
