Dot has asked millions of mobile users of the country to avoid fraud in the name of closing the SIM card. The Department of Telecommunications has shared information about this with its official X handle. The Department of Telecommunications has also asked to report fake calls, messages etc. Also, SIM is asked to avoid swap fraud. These days many users have reported that they are coming to the name of the telecom department and their SIM is being said to be shut down.
DOT has warned people that no call or message is made by the Telecom Department or TRAI or Telecom Company for the closure of the SIM card to the users. Also, people have asked people not to pay attention to such calls and messages. DOT has also asked KYC updates and fake link messages or e-mail to avoid.
What is sim swap fraud?
In Digital World, users protect social media accounts from their bank account through two-factor authentication. In such a situation, if any transaction is done from their bank account, then it will not be able to process through one-time password or OTP. Similarly, OTP is required to log in to social media accounts.
Cyber criminals issue a new SIM card for the user’s mobile number for this. For this, they first trap the user in their net through social engineering and then get the new SIM of their number activated in their phone. After this, all the OTP cyber criminals coming to the user’s number will come to the number. In this way the fraud is carried out.
Changes in the rules of Sim Swap
Many times the user does not even know when the cyber criminal has trapped him in this trap. However, the Department of Telecommunications has changed the rule of issuing new SIM if the SIM is lost or malfunctioned. Now a new SIM is not released without biometric verification. Also, the facility of incoming SMS is closed for 24 hours after the new SIM is released. In such a situation, even if the SIM card of a user is accidentally swapped by the cyber criminal, then OTP will not come to him.
How to avoid
The Department of Telecommunications has said in its warning that people’s vigilance is very important to avoid any kind of fraud. People should not share their personal information with anyone.
Especially on social media platforms, only your relatives and people should share anything. Messages, calls etc. coming from unknown number or ID should be ignored.
Also, do not click on the link given in any prize money, lottery, gift etc. message. By doing this, cyber criminals will enter your phone or laptop and steal your personal information.
