Manesar: The Haryana Police has arrested two Nigerian nationals for allegedly duping a 62-year-old woman from Manesar of Rs 1.5 crore. The scammers have been identified as 32-year-old Ebuka Felix and 36-year-old Chukuwaka Ewere and they both were staying in Delhi’s Mayur Vihar area.
Scamsters befriended woman on social media
According to a report of the Times Of India, Ebuka Felix and Chukuwaka Ewere befriended the Manesar resident on the social media platform Instagram. After gaining the trust of the woman, they started sending her expensive gifts.
Woman ends up paying Rs 1.5 crore
The scammers then tricked the woman by telling her that the parcel containing a gift for her was held at the airport security and she needed to pay a fine to get it released. Within several months, the woman transferred around Rs 1.5 crore to the bank account of the accused.
Accused arrested by the cops
After realising that she had been duped, the woman filed a complaint at a police station in Manesar. Both the accused were tracked and arrested after an FIR was lodged against them under Sections 419 and 420 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and provisions of the IT Act.
Nigerian nationals duped over 1,500 people
During the interrogation, both the accused revealed that they have so far cheated more than 1,500 people through social media and diverted the money to Nigeria. As many as 85 cases of cheating have been filed against both the accused across the country.
“Two Nigerian nationals used to befriend women on social media platforms and after winning their trust they used to dupe them and send the money to their native country,” a senior police officer said explaining the modus operandi of the scammers. “After duping their targets, both the accused would eventually block them,” he added.
