Has India-US trade talks closed? Piyush Goyal broke silence
Has trade talks between India and America stopped due to tariff war? If this question is going on in your mind too, then you know the answer here. Addressing an industry conference on Tuesday, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said that talks are going on between India and the United States regarding the bilateral trade agreement (BTA). According to PTI news, the Union Minister also said that India has so far signed the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with Australia, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Mauritius, United Kingdom (UK) and European Free Trade Association (EFTA).
Negotiations going on from March, 6th round postponed
The talks between India and the US started in BTA from March 2025 and so far five rounds have been completed. However, due to 50% import duty implemented from August 27, the US delegation has postponed the proposed sixth round of talks from 25 August. The new date has not been announced yet. On the other hand, in an interview given to a TV channel, American Treasury Secretary Scott Besent said that India and America are two great democracy and eventually the dispute will be resolved. India’s values are closer to America and China, not Russia. He objected to India’s Russian oil purchase and re -export.
India’s clear answer
India has dismissed the allegations, saying that its energy purchase is completely national interest and market price based. India described the 50% tariff imposed by the US as “inappropriate and arbitrary”. Goyal also said that India’s supply chain has now become stronger and flexible than ever. He said that India is no longer dependent on the grace of any country. This self -sufficiency is able to face today’s youth to face global challenges.
India-EU Free Trade Agreement Dialogue in the last phase
Goyal said that the talks on the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and the European Union (EU) have reached a decisive turn. Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal is currently talking to EU officials in Brussels. The 13th round will be held in India from 8 September. After this meeting, EU’s Trade Commissioner Maros Sefkovich can visit India. India and EU resumed talks on this comprehensive agreement after an interval of eight years in June 2022.
The agreement includes 23 major policy sectors, including trade, investment protection, intellectual property rights, government procurement, dispute solution, geographical indicators, sustainable development, technical barriers and other business rules. The European Union imports 17% of India’s total exports, while India supplies 9% of its total exports to the EU. This period of FTA is being given special importance because both sides have set a target of finalizing the agreement by the end of 2025.
