Heavy rains caused havoc in Kerala, red alerts in 4 districts, school-college closed
Heavy rains in Kerala have become a problem for the common people.
Thiruvananthapuram: Heavy rains in the northern parts of Kerala have caused havoc. Red alert has been issued in 4 districts of Kasargod, Kannur, Kozhikode and Wayanad. There have been reports of landslides and floods in many areas due to rain. The Indian Meteorological Department i.e. IMD said that districts with red alert may receive more than 20 centimeters of rain in 24 hours. Rainfall is estimated at 11 to 20 centimeters in the districts Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad and Malappuram with orange alerts. The remaining 5 districts are Yellow alert in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamtitta, Alappuzha and Kottayam, where 6 to 11 cm of rain can occur.
School-college shutdown, ban on tourism
In view of heavy rains, all educational institutions have been announced on July 17 in Kasargod, Kannur, Thrissur and Wayanad. The Wayanad district administration has taken strict steps and banned all tourism activities, mining works and use of JCB till further orders. Admission to Mundakai-Churalamala area is completely banned, where more than 200 people died due to landslides in July last year. The water level of Uppala and Mogral rivers in Kasargod is increasing rapidly. Irrigation Design and Research Board i.e. IDRB has warned people living on the banks of these rivers to be vigilant.
Administration gathered in preparation for relief work
The administration has appealed to the people to stay in safe places and contact local authorities to help if needed. The local administration is monitoring the situation and is preparing for relief work. People have been appealed not to get out of the house unnecessarily and take precautions in areas affected by rain. The Meteorological Department has predicted heavy rains for the next few days, so everyone has been advised to be vigilant. This process of rain in Kerala has become a problem for all the people, but the administration and the meteorological department are fully active to deal with any situation.
