Heavy rain in Rudraprayag

Dehradun: The situation is deteriorating due to heavy rains in Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand. More than 1,600 Chardham pilgrims were transported to safe places due to large stones falling on the walking route going to Kedarnath near Gaurikund and blocking the route. Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Secretary Vinod Kumar Suman said that water and silt have entered about a dozen houses in many villages of the district. He said that relief and rescue work started at six in the morning and is still going on.

Heavy rain between 1 pm and four o’clock in the night

Suman said that no casualties were reported. Suman said, “There was continuous rains in the district between one o’clock in the night and four o’clock in the night, causing the rivers to be in spate and their water entered about ten houses in Chameli and Rumi, Chamrada Tok and Vijayanagar region. Many roads were also broken.”

Kedarnath walking route blocked

About 30 meters of Kedarnath walking road, about 50 meters from Gaurikund’s horse stop, was blocked by heavy stones and debris, after which the district administration, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) and teams of other concerned departments immediately started relief work there. He said that the passengers were evacuated by making an alternative route.

700 pilgrims still stranded

Suman said that about 1,600 pilgrims have been evacuated from Kedarnath so far and the process of evacuating about 700 other pilgrims is going on. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami inquired about the situation from disaster management officials and instructed them to take care of the safety of pilgrims as well as to speed up relief and rescue operations. The Disaster Management Department as well as the Revenue Department, Public Works Department, Police Department and Health Department started getting relief and rescue work from 6 am.
