This helicopter is used by security forces, private charters and corporate services worldwide. The helicopter was delivered to the Malaysian police in 1996. In November of 2023, new tenders were issued to change them.

Regarding the claim of the helicopter being old, Inspector General of Police Datuk Seri Mohammad Khalid Ismail said, “Purna is not a problem, proper maintenance is important. What happened was out of our control.” At the time when the helicopter fell into the river, three officers riding in it were members of the police air unit while the other two Tanjung are posted in Kupang Police Station.
