Bulldozer run at Durga temple in Dhaka.
Dhaka: The Hindu has united after India’s severe condemnation of the alleged demolition of the Durga temple located in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. Hundreds of Hindus protested on the roads on Friday in Dhaka. A day before this, India’s Foreign Ministry had strongly condemned the sabotage at Durga Temple in Dhaka. India had said that it is the primary responsibility of the interim government of Bangladesh to protect religious minorities, especially Hindus, and their religious places.
Foreign Ministry’s tough stand
Foreign Ministry spokesman Randhir Jaiswal had said in a conversation with the media that India had received information that the Durga temple located in Khilkhet area of Dhaka was being targeted by extremist elements. He said, “We were deeply disappointed to know that amidst the demands of demolishing the temple, the interim government termed it as a case of illegal land and allowing demolition. This caused it to damage the idol before transferring it.”
Hindus are constantly being targeted
India reiterated that such incidents happening in Bangladesh are a matter of concern and this raises questions on the religious tolerance there. Jaiswal insisted that “it is the responsibility of the Bangladesh government to completely protect the Hindu community, their properties and their religious places”.
Strong performance in Dhaka
Hindu community and civil organizations have also staged a strong protest on Thursday and Friday in Dhaka. Many social organizations in India have also raised their voice about this incident. Regarding the possible renovation and bilateral dialogues of the Ganga Water Treaty, the Ministry of External Affairs said, “India is ready to negotiate with Bangladesh on all subjects in an environment based on a transparent and mutual interest.”
India-Bangladesh relations are running stress
These days, there has been a lot of bitterness in India-Bangladesh relations. Regarding the ban on export of textiles and other consumer products from Bangladesh through the border recently, the Ministry of External Affairs said that the step has been taken under the expectation of mutuality, fairness and equal behavior from Dhaka. Jaiswal said that India has raised these issues many times, even in Commerce Secretary level meetings, and now they are waiting for a satisfactory solution. (Language)
