Hope of life on Mars found from 107 lakh old evidence found on Earth, scientists made the biggest discovery
Science News Desk – Billions of years ago, water flowed on Mars. Scientists have discovered it from a 17 crore year old meteorite. This meteorite was found when an asteroid collided with Mars and fell on Earth. That rock from Mars had fallen in the American state of Indiana. In 1931, the rock was found in a drawer at Purdue University and was named the Lafayette meteorite. How it reached that drawer is still a mystery. However, scientists have analyzed the rock to determine its age, as well as how it was formed. The results of the analysis have been published in Geochemical Perspective Letters.
What did the meteorite fragments reveal about Mars?
First of all the researchers tried to find out when this rock was formed. According to Marisa Tremblay, lead author of the study, ‘We determined the age of these minerals and found that they were formed 742 million years ago.’ Tremblay believes the minerals in the meteorite may have formed due to a reaction with liquid water on Mars.
Where did water come from on Mars?
Tremblay’s team measured the amount of radioactive isotopes in the minerals to determine the age of the meteorite. Previous attempts to do so were influenced by other processes on Earth. That is, there were some problems with the earlier research. Focusing on argon isotopes helped the team determine the most accurate age.
