Beijing: A major accident occurred late Friday night in the northwest part of China. At least 12 laborers died due to the fall of an under -construction railway bridge in China, while four others are still missing. The accident occurred in Kinghai province, where the construction work of the railway bridge on a major river was going on. This has also raised questions on China’s construction quality.
Accident occurred at 3 o’clock in the night
According to the government news agency ‘Xinhua’, the accident happened around 3 pm. Then 16 workers were working on the bridge. Meanwhile, a steel cable broke, causing all the workers working fell into the Yellow River. In the photographs released by Xinhua, a large part of the bridge is broken and hanging in the river. A major part of the curved blue arches is missing and a tip of the bridge looks completely tilted, which shows the seriousness of this horrific accident.
Search for missing people continues
The rescue operation was immediately started after the accident. Missing laborers are being searched with the help of boats, helicopters and underwater robots. So far, the bodies of 12 laborers have been recovered, while the search for 4 is going on. Officials said that rescue operations are being done at a fast pace, but problems are facing due to the depth and strong current of the river.
The bridge was being built 180 feet high
According to the report of ‘China Daily’, the bridge is 1.6 km long and is about 55 meters (180 ft) above the river surface. The bridge is part of an ambitious railway project, which was being prepared for the purpose of connecting inaccessible areas of western China to the rest of the country.
The officials have started a detailed investigation into the accident and efforts are being made to know whether the cause of the cable break was technical flaw or negligence. The local administration has assured the families of the victims to provide assistance. (AP)
