Ahmedabad plane crash: An Air India aircraft crashed shortly after flying from Ahmedabad Airport on Thursday afternoon. It had 242 passengers and crews. A large number of people are expected to be casualties in this accident. This tragic Air India aircraft accident in Ahmedabad has raised serious questions about passenger safety and financial results of such disasters. This Boeing aircraft of Air India started coming down rapidly after some time after taking off and crashed in Meghaninagar area near the airport. Now the question is, who will pay the financial results of this accident? Did the passengers insurance and how much money will be received to their families in this situation. Let’s know in detail.

What does the law say?

Airlines are determined by international rules like Montreal Convention, 1999 in the event of death or injury in India. India has signed these convections. Under this, the airlines will have to pay this:

  • In case of death or physical injury, 1,28,821 special drawing rights (SDR) per passenger will have to be given. This is equal to about 1.4 crore rupees. Regardless of any mistake, the airline will have to pay this money.
  • If the airline’s negligence is proved, then this limit may also have to pay more compensation.
  • This compensation for international flights becomes mandatory under the convention. But Indian domestic airlines often follow the same standards under the DGCA guidelines.

How does travel insurance help?

Travel insurance can provide an additional financial security. It is found under the following circumstances:

  • Accidental death and disability
  • Medical Evcation
  • On being hospitalized in emergency
  • Flight delay/cancellation
  • Loss of goods

How much is the cover in travel insurance policy?

  • In accidental death coverage, Rs 25 lakh to Rs 1 crore is available.
  • 5-10 lakh rupees are available for permanent disability.
  • There is a fixed daily payment for hospitalization or travel discomfort.

However, according to experts, it only gets the benefit to policyholders who choose and buy it before flying. Many Indian passengers still ignore this option.

What if a passenger did not buy travel insurance?

If you have not bought a separate travel insurance, you can still be eligible for it:

  • Airline compensation (which is mandatory)
  • Government grace (found in rare cases)
  • Employer insurance (for business travelers)
  • Credit Card Linked Travel Insurance (If you have booked tickets through some premium credit card)
  • Some passengers fall under the group insurance plans provided by tour operators or employees sponsored travel policies.
