The tradition of this festival is a little different in Tamil Nadu, where everyone together celebrates this beautiful festival of Diwali. Everyone celebrates the festival of Diwali, but there are different traditions and customs to celebrate it in different places. In Tamil Nadu, the festival of Diwali starts a day before Amavasya. Before the festival, the house is cleaned and decorated with Kolam, Rangoli, betel leaves, dry fruits, flowers and other leaves.

While in North India, the festival of Diwali is celebrated by lighting lamps to celebrate the arrival of Ram and Sita after their 14-year exile, whereas in Tamil Nadu, this festival is celebrated to celebrate the killing of Narakasura by Shri Krishna. This festival is celebrated on the new moon day of Kartik month in North India, but in South India, Diwali festival starts on Chaturdashi of Krishna Paksha of Kartik month. On that day, people take bath by applying oil and paste early in the morning before sunrise, because the next day is Amavasya and one cannot take bath by applying oil on the head on that day. In this way, the celebration of Diwali for Tamil people starts with taking bath by applying oil early in the morning.

In most of the states of India, new clothes are worn on the day of Diwali, but in Tamil Nadu, whether a person is poor or rich, he definitely buys new clothes according to his status. After taking bath for this festival, the traditional new clothes bought are kept in front of the Lord at night itself. Next morning i.e. on the festival day, the head of the house gives this cloth to everyone as a blessing with his own hands. All the family members happily wear these clothes and greet the elders and seek their blessings. In Tamil Nadu, there is still a tradition of prostration and if one is a Brahmin, then of prostration by reciting Gayatri Mantra, which they have maintained till now.

Special for newlyweds

Newly married couples having their first Diwali are called Thalai Diwali (First Diwali). For this, the husband comes to his in-laws house with his wife a day before and both celebrate Diwali. Long ago, the boy’s entire family used to come to his in-laws’ house and participate in this celebration. The boy’s family brings new clothes for everyone. Usually they buy saree for the daughter-in-law on the first Diwali. Apart from this, the girl also gets a saree from her peer. After this, firecrackers are burst and earthen lamps are lit at night.

On the eve of Narak Chaturthi, women prepare a special medicine ‘Marundu’. In this, black pepper, dry ginger, black cumin, pippali, liquorice and many other medicines are mixed and cooked in jaggery syrup after crushing and filtering. A lot of ghee, sesame oil etc. are added to it. It is believed that in order to avoid feeling unwell after eating different dishes during the festival, this medicine is given beforehand, which is a digestive. After this, the sweets and dishes already prepared are kept in front of the Lord. On this day everyone goes to the neighborhood and asks ‘Have you bathed in the Ganges?’ Let’s ask. In the morning, relatives are visited and in the afternoon, various types of delicious dishes like rice, sambar, rasam, payasam, three-four types of vegetables, raita, medu vada etc. are prepared and papads are fried. In this way a completely traditional meal is prepared, the exchange of which continues for several days.
