Dhaka: The biennial level meeting between the heads of the Border Security Forces was held in Dhaka on Thursday amid the ongoing tension between India and Bangladesh. During this, the BSF gave a clear message that we will continue to send illegal Bangladeshi intruders back. The center of this conversation was important issues such as illegal infiltration, border violence and strengthening bilateral cooperation.

Sending illegal intruders back

India clarified that it is sending only illegal intruders back. The Indian Border Security Force (BSF) Director General Daljit Singh Chaudhary said in a joint press conference held with Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) chief Major General Mohammad Ashrafuzamam Siddiqui that “The people being sent from India to Bangladesh are those who have illegally entered and they are being sent back under proper procedures.”

550 insensitivity returned from the border

Chaudhir informed that so far 550 people have been handed over to BGB and 2,400 cases have been verified with the help of Bangladeshi High Commission in India. Chaudhary clarified that the two countries have an established mechanism of legal repatriation, through which such cases are settled.

Discussion on firing and violence on border

The BGB chief Siddiqui also raised the issue of deaths of the people on the border during the conversation, especially a young Bangladeshi boy’s BSF mentioning the alleged shooting by the BSF. Responding to this, the BSF chief said, “Our jawans use deadly weapons only when their lives are threatened. He said that in the first six months of this year, 35 BSF jawans have been seriously injured in attacks carried out by the intruders in the first six months of this year.”

The BSF said, “We first warn, then stop the way and in the end, if necessary, they firing. During the meeting, both sides committed collective efforts to prevent crime, terrorism and fundamentalism. It was agreed to discuss that joint public awareness programs would be run. Social-economic development will be increased against border security in sensitive border areas. Measures will be taken to prevent movement. Also, it was agreed to establish a permanent border column in areas like Muhurir and demarcate the border rivers. (Language).
