The film’s hit for a normal person means that he has performed well, but these days words like superhit and blockbuster are often used without understanding. However, the film industry has some standards for these words. If the film doubles from its budget, it is considered a superhit. If this earning is even higher then it is called a blockbuster. But there are very few films, which earn five times or more of their budget. There is also a film that grossed a hundred times more than its budget and went to theaters for more than a year. This is the story of India’s highest profit -making film.
Film lasts for 460 days
In 2006, famous writer-director of Kannada film industry, Yograj Bhatt, formed a romantic drama ‘Mungaru Male’. The film was of a low budget, including emerging actors Ganesh and Pooja Gandhi along with veteran actor Anant Nag. The budget of the film was only Rs 70 lakh, but after releasing in December, ‘Mungaru Male’ became a sleeper hit. The film became the highest grossing film in the Kannada film industry along with celebrating Golden Jubilee in Karnataka and other places. It performed for a year in multiplexes and lasted for 460 days in PVR Bangalore, which was a record. It also became the first Kannada film to earn Rs 50 crore worldwide. The total collection of the film was around Rs 75 crore, with Rs 57 crore from Karnataka and was considered the hit film of the industry.
Star became actors with the success of the film
The success of this film not only made Ganesh and Pooja Gandhi a star, but both of them made their mark in Kannada cinema with many hit films in the next few years. He became the most demanded actor and actress of that time. However, this success proved to be bitter for the film’s producer E. Krishna. The Income Tax Department claimed that ‘Mungaru Male’ had grossed Rs 67.50 crore and demanded to pay tax for it. After this, the department also raided against the manufacturer.
Remake made in these languages
The box office records of ‘Mungaru Male’ persisted for more than a decade, until ‘KGF Chapter 1’ broke it. The film was remake in Telugu, Bengali, Odia, and Marathi and its spiritual sequel ‘Mungaru Male 2’ was released in 2016. The film took the form of a cult among the Kannada audience, which is repeatedly broadcast on TV and recently released on the OTT platform.
