India votes against Pakistan resolution on conventional arms control At United Nations
Conventional Arms Control Resolution: At the United Nations (UN), India voted against Pakistan’s resolution on conventional arms control at regional and sub-regional levels. The resolution on Pakistan and Syria was accepted by a record number of votes in the First Committee of the United Nations General Assembly, in which 179 members voted in its favor. Whereas Israel did not participate in the voting and India was the only country to vote against this resolution.
According to news agency PTI, the First Committee of the United Nations General Assembly deals with disarmament, global challenges and threats to peace that affect the international community. The resolution recognizes “the vital role of conventional arms control in promoting regional and international peace and security.”
What was said in the proposal?
The resolution said, “It is believed that conventional arms control should be pursued primarily in regional and sub-regional contexts because most threats to peace and security in the post-Cold War era are primarily “Arise between states located in the same region or sub-region.”
It “notes with particular interest the initiatives taken in this regard in different regions of the world, particularly discussions among several Latin American countries and proposals for conventional arms control in the context of South Asia” In the context of this topic, the relevance and importance of conventional arms control to regional security has been recognised.”
Decision taken to urgently consider conventional arms control
The resolution calls for “urgent consideration of issues related to conventional arms control at the regional and subregional levels, recognizing that militarily significant States and States with large military capabilities have a special responsibility in promoting such agreements for regional security.” It was decided to do so.
