Nepal President Ramchandra Paudel, continuing the decades-old tradition since 1950, conferred the honorary title of General of Nepal Army to Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi in a special ceremony held on Thursday (November 21, 2024) at Rashtrapati Bhavan (Sheetal Bhawan). Awarded with. General Dwivedi, who is leading a five-member delegation, arrived here on Wednesday on a five-day official visit at the invitation of his Nepali counterpart General Ashok Sigdel.

On this occasion, the President presented a sword, insignia and certificate of honor order to General Dwivedi. Prime Minister K.P. Nepal Army sources said that as part of the ongoing relations between the armies of India and Nepal since 1950, there has been a tradition of giving the honorary title of General to each other’s army chiefs.

Discussion on furthering military bilateral relations between Nepal and India

Earlier in the day, General Dwivedi met General Sigdel at the Nepali Army headquarters here and discussed matters related to cooperation between the two armies, officials said. Indian Embassy sources said the two discussed taking forward military bilateral relations between Nepal and India.

General Dwivedi was also given ‘Guard of Honour’

The Indian Embassy said that General Dwivedi also planted a Rudraksh sapling in the premises of Nepal Army Headquarters in Kathmandu, indicating the everlasting friendship between the two armies. Earlier in the morning, General Dwivedi paid tribute by laying a wreath at the Bir Smarak (Martyrs Memorial) at the Army Pavilion in Tundikhel, Kathmandu. He was also given a ‘Guard of Honour’ at the Army Headquarters. During his visit, Dwivedi will visit the ‘Army Staff College’ in Shivpuri on the outskirts of Kathmandu. Officials said that they also plan to tour the mountainous region by plane.

General Dwivedi’s wife also went along

General Dwivedi is also accompanied by his wife and President of the Indian Army’s ‘Army Wives Welfare Association’ Sunita Dwivedi. Sunita Dwivedi met Mrs. Neeta Chhetri Sigdel, President of ‘Nepali Army Wives Association’ in her office.
