International Criminal Tribunal issues arrest warrant against ousted Bangladesh Prime Minister Hasina

Dhaka, 17 October (HIST). The International Crimes Tribunal today issued an arrest warrant against ousted Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Sheikh Hasina and others have been accused of mass killings during anti-discrimination student protests in July and August.

According to the Dhaka Tribune newspaper, the tribunal issued the arrest warrant today after the formal start of judicial proceedings. The proceedings began at 11:30 am in the bench headed by tribunal chairman Justice MD Golam Murtuza Majumdar. The tribunal’s prosecution team requested for issuance of arrest warrants against 50 persons, including Hasina.

More than 60 complaints related to the movement have been filed at the International Criminal Tribunal against Hasina, her Awami League party and 14 other coalition leaders, journalists and former top officials of law enforcement agencies.

Earlier, the tribunal’s chief prosecutor Advocate Tajul Islam had said on Sunday that this week an arrest warrant and travel ban would be sought against the accused in the mass murders that took place in July. He had said that Interpol’s assistance would be sought to bring back the fugitives including Hasina.
