International Day Against Drug: World Drug Drug Day is observed every year on 26 June. The day is dedicated to the global fight against drug abuse and illegal smuggling. Its main objective is to raise awareness about the major problems arising from the consumption of intoxicants worldwide and to create a society that is free from drugs.
History, theme and purpose: The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) passed a resolution on 7 December 1987 and declared June 26 as International Drugs Day. This day was celebrated for the first time in the year 1989 and since then this day is being celebrated every year. • Ban on illegal smuggling: To strengthen international cooperation and action against illegal cultivation, production and smuggling of drugs.
• Evidence-based approach: Promoting scientific evidence and policies based on human rights to deal with the problem of drugs.
Side effects of intoxication:Consumption of drugs affects not only a particular person, but his family, society and the whole country:
• Physical and mental health: Addiction to the body’s vital organs such as liver, kidney, brain and heart are affected. Mental health also has a serious effect, which can cause depression, anxiety and other mental disorders.
• Social and economic influence: Drug addicts often fall prey to crime, poverty and social isolation. This breaks the families and increases unrest in the society.
• Crime and violence: Illegal drug trade is often associated with organized crime, violence and corruption. Let us know that these days the youth are getting the most affected by drug addiction and every drug has more impact on health and mental health.
What can we do on this occasion: This day is not only the responsibility of the government or agencies, but every person can contribute to it. Like- spread awareness: Tell the people around you, especially children and youth about the ill effects of intoxication. Avoid drugs yourself and adopt a healthy lifestyle. If someone is struggling with drug addiction, encourage them to treat. And support government policies and laws that prevent drug abuse and punish criminals.
In this way, we can understand that World Drug Addiction Day once again gives us an opportunity to take a pledge to build a society where every person can live a healthy, safe and drug -free life.
