Kathmandu, 18 October (Hindustan Reporter). Local Islamic organizations are involved in illegal entry of Rohingya and Bangladeshi Muslims into Nepal. A report of security agencies submitted to the government has revealed that these illegal infiltrators were also given Nepalese citizenship.

According to this report, these immigrants are mainly entering from Kakarbhitta border area in the eastern part of Nepal connected to West Bengal. The report submitted by the Intelligence Branch of Nepal Police to the government also mentions the infiltration of Bangladeshi Muslims as labourers. In this report, the Islamic Association of Nepal is accused of playing a major role in providing Nepalese citizenship to the Muslim community by allowing them to enter the country illegally. The report said the Islamic Association plays a central role in this process by compiling a list of these Bangladeshi Muslims and sending it to the Nepal Muslim Commission and its chairman. The Commission falsely verifies these individuals as family members of Bangladeshi citizens who have already acquired Nepali citizenship, allowing them to avoid legal scrutiny.

Some of the Bangladeshi and Rohingya Muslims have been successful in obtaining Nepalese passports with the help of the Islamic Association, and some of these were caught recently. The increasing number of Bangladeshi Muslims gaining citizenship has raised concerns about demographic change in the Madhes and Terai regions. Pushkar Karki, a retired AIG of Nepal Police, who worked in the Special Bureau of Nepal Police for a long time, said that these actions are part of the broader agenda of foreign radical organizations like Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan, which is allegedly an affiliate of the Islamic Federation of Nepal. Let’s cooperate together. These organizations aim to change the demographic balance in southern Nepal by increasing the population of Bangladeshi Muslims through illegal immigration and citizenship manipulation.

Dr. Dipesh KC, an expert on security matters in Nepal, reported that in addition to his efforts to secure citizenship for Bangladeshi Muslims, Islamic Union leaders are reportedly engaged in regular discussions with leaders of various Nepali political parties. During these meetings, they are believed to be pressurizing political figures to legalize the citizenship status of Bangladeshi citizens living in Nepal, further complicating the matter.

Nepal is also facing a rising influx of Rohingya refugees fleeing Myanmar and a large number of Rohingya have entered Nepal since 2017, a Home Ministry report said. The Home Ministry has the fact that the number of Rohingya refugees in Nepal has now reached around 800. However, Nepal does not officially recognize them as refugees. UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) has issued identity cards to 370 Rohingya persons in Nepal, while an additional 123 applications are pending. Many of these refugees are now looking to rent land on the outskirts of Kathmandu, especially on the outskirts of Tikathali and Bhaktapur in Lalitpur. This has also increased security and demographic concerns in Nepal itself.

In the latest report submitted to the government, security agencies in Nepal have expressed concern over the increasing influx of illegal immigrants, including Rohingya refugees. This growing trend has become a matter of concern for Nepal’s national security as illegal immigration threatens to disrupt the social, political and demographic fabric of the country. The government is urging security officials to strengthen border surveillance and curb illegal immigration activities by preventing any attempts by Muslim organizations to call such Bangladeshi Muslims in Nepal and facilitate their stay. Address this challenge more effectively by simultaneously managing the humanitarian aspect of the refugee crisis.
