Israel: Netanyahu government in crisis, bill to dissolve Parliament, what is the reason?
Benjamin Netanyahu
The political crisis in Israel has become serious. Netanyahu’s coalition government is under threat. On Wednesday, the opposition has introduced a bill to dissolve Parliament. The reason for this is the anger of the extremist parties involved in the alliance. These parties have threatened that if the law exempted from military service to religious students is not passed, they will support the proposal to dissolve Parliament.
Will the government fall immediately on passing the proposal?
However, there have been several rounds of talks between the leaders of the coalition recently so that the dispute can be resolved. This issue has become quite sensitive amidst the ongoing war with Hamas. However, government sources still hope that there may be an agreement. Earlier on Tuesday, the Israeli media reported that an attempt was being made to postpone the proposal that dissolves the Parliament for a week. Even if this proposal is passed, the government will not fall immediately. Because the bill that dissolves the Parliament has to go through voting in four phases before the law is enacted.
Why are the conservative parties angry?
However, both the excessive parties involved in the Netanyahu alliance are very angry at this issue. The Israeli Supreme Court in 2017 termed exemption from military service to religious students as unconstitutional. Since then, many governments could not pass any new law on this. Last week, the United Torah Judaisom announced that if no solution was found, it would vote in favor of dissolving Parliament. Meanwhile, ‘Shas’ spokesperson Asher Medina told Israeli Public Radio, “We are not happy to drop the right -wing government, but now we have come to the breaking point.” If no solution comes out, the ‘rule’ will vote in favor of dissolving Parliament.
At the same time, the officials have to say that the entire process of dissolving Parliament can last for weeks or months. In the alliance, dozens of other bills were added to the functions of Parliament on Wednesday to prolong the time. Explain that Netanyahu’s Likud Party also controls the committee which will decide how fast the proposal will move forward.
