Kabir Khan has recently revealed this in an interview to the screen. Kabir Khan says, ‘I just listened to my heart. But you are right, nowadays people evaluate it before watching a film. But at that time, no one said that the film is objectionable. However, there was a line that the censor board wanted to cut me, when Om Puri is called ‘Jai Shri Ram’, bid farewell to Salman. The filmmaker further said, ‘He felt that it could make people, especially the Muslim population angry. But I struggled for this. I remember I saw this film in Gaity Galaxy, which is one of the best single-screen theaters in Mumbai. The theater filled with Muslim blue-collar laborers of Bandra resonated with applause as soon as the line arrived. This was a clear indication that people who doubted it were wrong. You could see how deep this moment had landed in his hearts. ‘
The film left the deep impact
When Kabir was asked if he hoped that the film would have a profound impact on the hearts of the audience, he said, ‘Not at that level. I realized that they were trying to handle themselves. They were crying. Then I realized that it is really emotional. Even now, when I see the last part again, my eyes become moist. And if my eyes are filled, then I can understand what effect it must have had on the audience. ‘In this conversation, Kabir Khan also told that Om Puri was not the first choice for this role. Kabir Khan had previously approached Naseeruddin Shah, who liked the script and character but could not do the film for some reasons.
