Gangtok: The 79th Independence Day was celebrated in Sikkim on Friday and Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang hoisted the national flag at Paljor Stadium here. During this, the CM provided one lakh rupees to 22 of the 199 people out of a total of 19 to take care of their elderly parents under the Shravan Kumar Award. Other award winners were awarded prizes in their respective districts during the 79th Independence Day celebrations.
The Sikkim government has launched the Shravan Kumar Award Scheme to honor sons and daughters who show exceptional care and dedication to elderly parents.
National flag hoisted in official residence
Earlier in the day, Tamang also hoisted the national flag at his official residence Mintokgang. Tamang said, “Come on this historic day, let us repeat the pledge to maintain the sanctity of our constitution and to be dedicated to the welfare, unity and development of our beloved nation.”

What did CM say to the people of the state?
Earlier, the Chief Minister congratulated all the people of the state on Independence Day. He said, “Today we are celebrating the spirit of freedom with the whole country, the sacrifice of our freedom fighters and the strength of our great democracy.” The Chief Minister said, “Independence Day is not only a memory of freedom from colonial rule, but it is also a call to maintain the values of unity, integrity and perseverance, which is the identity of our nation.”
Referring to Sikkim, he said that his government is fully committed to creating a self -sufficient, equal and rich state, where every child will get quality education, opportunity to every youth, respect for every farmer and every family will get a safe future. (With language inputs)
