Chennai. Usha Vance, wife of JD Vance, who has been nominated for the post of the next Vice President of America, has connections with the premier institute here, IIT-Madras.

Usha Vance is the first Indian-origin woman to become America’s Second Lady. His father Radhakrishnan is an M.Tech student from IIT-Madras. When IIT-Madras came into existence in Chennai, his grandfather Ram Shastri was the first Head of the Department of Physics. He has served IIT-Madras for three terms and has also received a special award from the then Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Bakthavachalam, for planting a vegetable garden.

IIT-Madras Director Professor V. Kamakoti also shared old pictures of the award distribution on a TV channel. The family later moved to America and Usha married Vance and is now ready to be crowned as the Second Lady of America.
