Justice Sanjeev Khanna will be the next Chief Justice of the country, CJI DY Chandrachud recommends

New Delhi: Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud has written a letter to the Law Ministry and nominated Justice Sanjiv Khanna, the second most senior judge of the Supreme Court, as his successor. CJI Chandrachud will retire on November 10. As per tradition, the Central Government had written a letter to him last week requesting the name of his successor.

After the approval of the Central Government, Justice Khanna will become the 51st Chief Justice of India. Justice Khanna’s tenure will be for 6 months. He will retire on 13 May 2025. Justice Khanna has been a part of many important decisions. Justice Khanna was part of the bench that gave the green signal to the Central Vista project. The bench led by Justice Khanna had granted interim bail to former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in the ED case related to the Delhi Excise Policy matter.

Justice Khanna has also been a part of the Constitution Bench, which upheld the decision to abrogate Article 370 of the Constitution. He was also part of the bench that struck down the 2018 electoral bond scheme. Justice Khanna enrolled as an advocate with the Delhi Bar Council in 1983. He practiced law initially in the district courts at Tis Hazari Complex in Delhi and later in the Delhi High Court and tribunals in diverse areas such as constitutional law, direct taxation, arbitration, commercial law, company law, land law, environmental law and medical negligence.
