Hyderabad: There have been allegations of forcing the students of Kalburgi Central University in Karnataka to wear hijab during the field trip. An NGO Legal Rights Protection Forum, a Hyderabad, wrote a letter to the University Registrar Rudra Gowda Patil, saying that Assistant Professor Abdul Majeed, Assistant Professor of History and Archaeology, deliberately visited Muslim monuments during the field trip and asked the students to cover their heads before going to a mauria. Students of Kalburgi and Bidar were included in this field trip.
What did the university registrar say?
University Registrar Rudra Gowda Patil said that no student has lodged any objection in this regard so far, but a committee has been formed in view of the complaint of an NGO. After examining the facts, further action will be taken on the basis of that report.
Hijab controversy has already happened in Karnataka
There has been a dispute in Karnataka due to hijab before. In fact, on 31 December 2021, six Muslim students were stopped from entering the classroom at a government pre-university (PU) college in Udupi district due to hijab. The matter came into the limelight in January 2022 and soon spread across the state.
The administration said that they were following the guidelines of the Government of Karnataka, which were to ensure uniformity among the students. But six girl students started protest against this policy and were suspended on 2 January 2022. He claimed that wearing hijab is his religious and fundamental right, which is protected under Article 25 (religious freedom) of the Indian Constitution. The case spread from Udupi to other colleges and districts. Some Hindu students started retaliation by wearing saffron shawls in protest against the hijab, which increased communal tension.
