Bengaluru: The Karnataka government is preparing to bring a new law to stop fake news and wrong information. The draft of Karnataka Missinformation and Fake News (Prohibition) Bill, 2025 has been prepared, which will be presented at the next cabinet meeting. Under this law, those who spread fake news on social media can be imprisoned up to 7 years and a fine of up to Rs 10 lakh or both. According to the draft bill, if a person spreads such wrong information from inside or outside Karnataka that damages public health, safety, peace or fairness of elections, he may have to suffer 2 to 5 years in jail and fine. There is a provision for a punishment of 2 years to those who help in spreading fake news.

What is fake news and missing?

The bill describes the misinformation in deliberately or negligent spreading wrong or misleading information. It does not include opinion, religious teachings, sutters, comedy or art, provided the common man does not consider it facts. At the same time, fake news includes wrong quotes, audio-video tampering, or fully created material. Bill is a matter of banning fake news on social media. At the same time, such material will also be stopped which is derogatory, porn, anti -female, or who insults eternal symbols and beliefs. In addition, superstition -spreading material will also be banned.

Special court and fast hearing

The government will create Fake News on Social Media Regulatory Authority to stop fake news. It will have Kannada and Culture, Information and Broadcasting Minister Chairperson. In addition, one member each from the Karnataka Assembly and the Legislative Council, two representatives from the social media platform, and one IAS officer will be included as the secretary. Special courts will be set up to hear the violation of the law and every court will appoint a special public prosecutor. Every bench of the High Court will also have a special public prosecutor.

Why is this law important?

The purpose of the bill states that the number of Internet users in India is continuously increasing. Currently 27% of Indians use internet, and India is the second largest internet user country after China. Social media is very powerful today, but a small fake news can create a ruckus in the whole country, so no message should be forwarded without knowing the truth. The government says that this law will curb the problem of fake news and the misuse of social media will stop. (PTI)
