Lahore: Due to the severe flood in the Ravi river in Pakistan’s Punjab province, the famous Gurdwara Darbar Sahib and the entire Kartarpur Corridor complex in Narowal district have been submerged, causing more than 100 people to be trapped there. This information was given by local authorities on Wednesday.
Gurdwara Darbar Sahib immersed in flood waters
Saifullah Khokhar, head of the Kartarpur Corridor Project Management Unit, said, “The entire campus has been submerged in flood waters, including Gurudwara Darbar Sahib.” He said that the officers and employees trapped in the corridor are being safely evacuated with the help of boats and a helicopter. Narowal Deputy Commissioner Hasan Raza said that the flood situation in the district became more serious after India was released additional water in the Ravi river. He said that the water level of the river in Kot Nain area of Shakargarh tehsil has reached 1,55,000 cusecs, while the maximum capacity of this place is 1,50,000 cusecs. This has caused heavy havoc in the areas around the river.
India warned on humanitarian grounds
Officials said that India had warned Pakistan of potential floods on “humanitarian base” on Sunday. This warning has come at a time when tension was seen between the two countries recently. This is considered to be the first formal contact between India and Pakistan after four days of tension in May.
India has postponed Indus Water Treaty
It is noteworthy that after the terrorist attack in Pahalgam on 22 April, India took steps like postponing the 1960 Indus Water Treaty, taking a tough stand against Pakistan. Flood information is usually shared through the Indus Water Commission, but this time information was given directly from the diplomatic channel.
Constant torrential rain
The flood has also affected thousands of acres of agricultural land, where the standing crops of paddy and fodder for animals have been completely submerged. Deputy Commissioner Raza said that the heavy rains in the last 24 hours have made the situation more serious. The villages are submerged and people have to leave home and go to safe places.
