Every year in the month of Sawan, millions of devotees, called Kavadia, depart to Shiva temples to anoint the Shivling by filling water from the Ganges River or other holy rivers, while traveling on foot. This journey is a symbol of unwavering reverence and devotion towards Lord Shiva, but it is very important to follow certain rules to achieve the full virtue of this journey. The journey can be considered incomplete without knowing these rules.
Importance of Kavad Yatra:

Kavad Yatra has its own deep spiritual and cultural significance. It is believed that Lord Parashurama first traveled to Kavad. In the Treta Yuga, when Ravana brought Ganga water from Haridwar to establish Lord Shiva in Lanka, the tradition of Kavad Yatra started. One of the main reasons for this is to please Lord Shiva and get his grace. By doing this journey, salvation is attained and all sins are washed away, there is also such a belief.
, Physical and mental purification: Traveling on foot purifies the body and mind. It is a type of penance that increases physical tolerance and mental firmness.
, Completion of desires: Devotees also travel to Kavad to fulfill their wishes. It is believed that happy with this difficult journey, Lord Shiva fulfills all the wishes of the devotees.
, Social harmony: The journey brings people from different regions and communities together, leading to social harmony and brotherhood.
Rules of Kavad Yatra:

Kavad Yatra is not only the name of water filling and reaching the temple, but it is a disciplined and sacred process that has its own specific rules. Following these rules makes the journey successful and virtuous:
1. Special attention to purity: During the Kavad Yatra, Kavadia has to remain physically and mentally pure. During this time, consumption of tamasic food (meat, alcohol, garlic, onion) is prohibited. Satvik food should be taken.
2. Do not keep Kavad on the ground: This is one of the most important rules. Kavad is not kept directly on the ground during the journey. If you want to rest, Kavad should be hanged from a tree or on the Kavad stand. It is believed that Kavad contains Ganga water and keeping it on the ground destroys his purity.
3. Barefoot travel: Most Kavadis perform the entire journey barefoot. It is considered an important part of penance. However, if there is a health problem, some devotees can wear slippers, but the barefoot journey is considered more virtuous.
4. Toilet and bath rules: For defecation or other natural activities, one should go away from the journey route and touched Kavad only after bathing.
5. Following celibacy: It is considered mandatory to follow celibacy during the journey.
6. Stay calm and silent: One should avoid having more conversations or getting into disputes during the journey. One should move forward by chanting the name of Lord Shiva or singing hymns.
7. No drug consumption: Consuming smoking, gutkha or any type of narcotics is strictly forbidden.
8. Satvik behavior: Do not quarrel with anyone, do not be angry, and have a sense of humility towards everyone.
9. Service to devotees: Helping and serving other Kavadis found on the way is also considered virtuous.
10. Kavad’s breakdown: If for some reason the Kavad breaks down or the water is spilled, it is considered inauspicious. In such a situation, you may have to go back to take Ganga water again.
Only by following these rules, the complete virtue of Kavad Yatra is attained. It is not just a journey, but a symbol of devotion, penance and self-control that gives spiritual happiness and peace to Shiva devotees. In this spring, if you too are thinking of going on Kavad Yatra, then keep these rules in mind and make your journey successful.
